Sunbed Safetey and FAQ’S
Here at Golden Tanning Studio we encourage responsible and safe tanning, so read through the info below so you’re clued up for your first visit!
our friendly and helpful staff will be able to guide and advise you on the best tanning solution for you and your skin.
We use 0.3 UV bulbs in our beds, which is recommended as a safe way of tanning. 0.3 refers to the regulation governing the maximum UV output of sunbeds. 0.3 It is the amount of UV exposure that the UE`s Scientific Committee on Consumer Products set as the limit of effective irradiance.
This is the same amount of UV you will get while tanning on the Mediterranean beaches in summer but without risk of burning.
The main benefits of this are:
A deeper, longer-lasting tan.
A gentler, kinder, and more relaxing tanning process.
Much lower risk of overexposure and burning. You can therefore tan for longer periods, allowing you to relax and unwind!
The depth of the tan that 0.3 lamps produce can also work out more cost-effectively for the you. By using 0.3 lamps, you will need fewer sessions to achieve as deep a tan.
A 0.3 tanning session gives you a deeper and longer lasting tan. The whole tanning process is gentle on the skin, the results are very natural and most importantly - the risk of burning is almost eliminated
ALWAYS wear eye protection! Closing your eyes is not enough!
How long should you tan for?
Everyone is different, people react differently to sunlight depending on their skin type. It is important when tanning, either in sunlight or sunbeds to know your skin type. There are six different classifications...
Our staff will be able to advise you on your own personal tanning plan. It is always better to start slow and build it up over time. Remember that after each tanning session, your tan will not come out straight away, your skin needs time to produce the melanin needed to generate a tan.
As a guide:
Skin type 1 - Should not use sunbeds. If you don’t tan in the sun, you won’t tan on a sunbed!
Skin type 2 -Start at 3 minutes.
Skin type 3 - Start at 3/6 minutes
Skin type 4 - Start at 6/9 minutes.
Skin type 5 - Start at 9 minutes.
Skin type 6 - Start at 9 minutes
Healthy skin tans best!
Skin needs to be sufficiently hydrated to reach and maintain a darker tan. Dry, neglected skin becomes more reflective to UV light. It is also true that neglected skin exfoliates faster, causing the tan to fade more quickly. Moisturise regularly and use a tanning cream or accelerator specially designed for sunbed use to ensure your skin absorbs the UV most effectively and builds a glowing, longer lasting tan. We have a range of products for every skin type available to purchase in the studio.
ONLY USE CREAMS MADE FOR INDOOR TANNING - ANY OTHER PRODUCTS CAN DAMAGE YOU SKIN, LEAD TO BURNING AND WILL DAMAGE OUR SUNBED ACRYLIC
FAQ’S
-
By UK law, people under the age of 18 are not allowed to use a UV tanning device and you will be asked for proof of age such as a driving licence, passport or birth certificate.
-
Yes! It is essential that you wear eye protection/goggles during any UV exposure from a tanning machine. If you don’t do this, continued exposure could damage your retina and lead to other eye issues such Photokeratitis (Cornea Sunburn), Cataracts, Pterygium (Abnormal tissue growth) and damage to the Cornea.
Also, it is recommended to remove contact lenses before a tanning session as they may cause irritation.
-
A premium tanning lotion helps protect your skin from ageing. Specific moisturisers, bronzers and accelerators are formulated for indoor tanning to enhance the skin’s reaction to UV light and to maintain moisture.
We have a selection of tanning lotions available to buy at reception, specially developed for indoor tanning. Any other not specifically designed for indoor tanning are not allowed as they can not only cause extra damage to your skin but also damage our sunbed acrylic, which will ultimately affect your tanning experience.
When you use a tanning lotion, do not shower for 60 – 90 minutes after the session. This allows your skin to maximise the results of the cream. The tanning lotion should be applied liberally to all areas that will be exposed to the UV. It is safe to use in sensitive areas as well.
What about my face?
The skin on your face is different to your body as it is thinner and much more sensitive. To maximise the tanning results on your face we recommend specifically designed face creams that can also be purchased in the salon. Sometimes, body lotions can also cause irritation if they get in your eyes.
Can I use an indoor tanning lotion outside?
Although these tanning lotions give excellent results when used in conjunction with indoor tanning systems, they do not protect against sunlight. Therefore, never use indoor tanning lotions as a sunblock as they do not contain any SPF.
Can I use my own lotion?
Products that aren’t approved by the salon cannot be used as they may contain ingredients such as SPF filters that will inhibit your skins’ natural tanning ability and can also cause serious damage to the bed’s acrylic.

Some medications can increase your sensitivity to UV light and therefore might cause sunburn. Some of these medications include but are not limited to:
Antibiotics
Diuretics
Anti-Depressants
Drugs for blood pressure
Antimalarials
Some Analgesics (in treatment for Rheumatism & Arthritis)
Some Contraceptive pills
Psoralens (for Psoriasis)
Eosin (Lipstick)
Conditions such as Diabetes, Epilepsy, Migraine and Asthma may be affected by exposure to UV light.
Please also note that with some skin disorders UV light can help, for example, Eczema and Acne. Always consult your doctor when you’re taking medication or contact your dermatologist about whether it is all right for you to enjoy indoor tanning.
-
Perfume, make-up, deodorant and other cosmetics can influence the effect UV light has on your skin. It is common that these cosmetics increase the sensitivity of your skin and can also increase the chance of getting sunburned. Some cosmetics also contain SPF’s that will block the UV from the bed. Therefore, make sure your skin is clean and you are not wearing any cosmetics before you start your tanning session.
The only exceptions are tanning lotions approved by the salon.

Yes! We have a stop botton on each bed that will immidiately stop the session if you need to for any reason.
Always immediately stop the tanning session if your skin reacts strangely, for instance, if you get a rash, itch or start to burn rapidly. Therefore, you should be sure that you know where the stop button is on the tanning device. It would be best if you looked for this stop button before you start the session. And be sure to do this every time you enjoy a session in a new sunbed. If after the tanning session the rash or itch doesn’t disappear, the best thing to do is to consult a doctor or dermatologist.
-
Your skin needs time to utilise UV exposure from the sun as well as from the tanning device. The melanocytes in your skin need time to produce melanin which gives your skin that tan colour. Thus, keep intervals of 48 hours between sessions.
-
Take care of your tan by using a tan extending moisturiser. These products have been specifically formulated to help lock in moisture while indoor tanning. As well as improving the condition of your skin they also help to keep your melanin accelerated between your tanning session which will result in a constantly improving tanning result.
Also, if you cannot use a sunbed for an extended period of time, a tan extender is ideal to help maintain your colour!
-
It is recommended to not use any tanning equipment whilst pregnant.
-
After having a tattoo you should wait at least one month (preferably 4-6 weeks) for your tattoo to heal completely before going on a sunbed, if you don’t want to see it fading too soon. After the healing process, it is recommended to use a sun block product on this area, a special cream or alternatively you can cover your tattoo with clothing or a bandage. In any case, you should make sure that your tattoo is protected by the UV rays which cause damage to the ink.
